Dark and tight, with toasted, masculine aromas that hint at barrique aging. The palate is serious and firm as it houses dark berry and plum flavors along with chocolate and smoke. A forward wine that should please most fans of Tuscan Sangiovese.

It has been years since we reviewed Burchino, and it’s more or less the same wine now that it was in 1997. The nose offers light fruit and cinnamon shadings, which sit in front of strawberry and plum flavors. The finish may be a touch raw and grabby, but as a whole it’s snappy enough to stay the course.

The charred aromas are much like sniffing a match stick. That same piercing woodiness rides high on the palate along with cherries, berries and licorice. The finish is plowed over with buttery oak—you can taste it clear as day. The texture, meanwhile, is firm and not easily penetrable. —M.S.

The opening aromas are not terribly concentrated or rich; they’re more like field scents backed by mild red fruit. Thin raspberry flavors run the palate prior to a dry, light finish with some dried and bitter cherry flavors. Simple. —M.S.

Tenuta di Burchino offers a traditional Chianti Superiore with streamlined aromas of red cherry and forest berry. There’s a sharp, edgy quality to this wine and the close is accented by a subtle hint of sourness.

Genius Loci is an elegant and linear Sangiovese that opens with oaky notes of exotic spice and vanilla followed by cherry, raspberry and pressed blue flower. It’s clean and crisp in the mouth with a long, but not overly dense or rich texture.

Tart if not fully sharp. A lot of citrus and red fruit on the palate, which may be good for some and too raw for others. One of our panelists even called this a “sourball.” Another liked the snappy berry character.

This is a biodynamic Chianti from the Pisa area with aromas of English breakfast tea, forest berry and wild mushroom. The tealeaf component is the strongest and the wine taste thin, sour and tart on the finish.

This bright and simple Chianti Superiore opens with cherry, bitter almond and blueberry aromas. The wine is crisp, clean, thin and zesty overall.

This smooth, balanced offering shows plenty of cherry, leather and cedar flavors. The round mouthfeel and the licorice and toast flavors on the palate are wrapped around ripe, almost candied fruit. Oak is present but there’s enough fruit to support it. A likeable wine to drink now.
