Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts off with hints of mint, baked berries and earth, then delivers slightly herbal, medicinal fruit and chocolate flavors. Feels lush in the mouth, with no rough edges. Imported by Dreyfus, Ashby & Co.

The main Cálem property is at a curve of the Douro, by the town of Pinhão, hence the name of the wine. It’s an earthy, traditional style, not bad for that, but definitely for those who enjoy wines with a touch of volatility. It does go well with rich meat dishes.

Firm, concentrated fruit and dusty tannins. The wine has acidity, freshness and attractive berry and fresh fruit flavors. Fine, vivid acidity completes a harmonious wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There are all the right elements in this rich, smooth Port: good acidity, firm tannins, power and fine flavors of figs, sultanas and sweet jelly. This is a very attractive wine, likely to age well over the medium term. Imported by Dreyfus, Ashby & Co.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fresh, despite the dense tannin, this is a ripe, juicy wine, full of black currant flavors and vibrant acidity. Wood treatment shows more cassis just at the end to round the wine out.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A golden, glowing wine, very concentrated. The burnt vanilla and dark chocolate flavors are intense. Like many 40-year olds, this has just a hint of a medicinal character, suggesting (rightly) that it should be sipped rather than drunk.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A full and rich style, with sweetness and jammy red fruits lifted by a citrus touch. This is full-bodied, red currant cordial, very fruity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Because of its relative youth (for a wood-aged Colheita), this is almost a Late Bottled style, with ruby color and a fruity, red berry character. It meshes together, the fruit still dominant and only a few hints of wood aging apparent.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A soft, sweet style of LBV that goes for red fruits, soft tannins and ripeness. The spirit is rather aggressive here, maybe from recent bottling, and the fruit feels almost put to one side.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The extra year’s wood aging has given this wine great depth of flavor and richness. It is concentrated, balancing sweet chocolate flavors and dry tannins to produce a finely structured wine that should age in bottle for another five years or more. —R.V.
