Vigna Cerretta shapes a smoky wine with notes of black fruit, road tar, licorice and spice. The wine presents an upfront layer of aromas but doesn’t offer as much depth after that. Give it time to find harmony and loosen its tight tannins. Drink after 2015.

This is a delicious Barolo, with aromas of beets, cherries and a touch of toast. The flavors of soy, rhubarb and leather are well bal anced, with the tannins and acids leading to a satiny finish. Drinkable now, but has the staying power to last for 10-plus years.

This vintage of Rapet shows vibrant fruit flavors that stretch into the realm of over ripeness. The aromas include stewy plum, raspberry and strawberry and are brought in line thanks to contrasting notes of mineral and white mushroom. It offers bursting berry flavors and very polished but firm tannins.

This rich, jammy wine will appeal to many, with its sweet core of raspberry fruit candy. The texture is soft, fat and very rich, although there is sufficient acid and tannin to keep the wine in balance. No great complexity here, but it’s easygoing and opulent.

Here’s a traditional interpretation of Nebbiolo by Giuseppe Marengo with immediate aromas of ginger, root beer, pencil shaving and Spanish cedar. The wine is compact yet not overconcentrated and offers a bright mouthfeel with spice tones and rock-hard tannins. Drink with stewed meats or pasta with wild boar.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though this wine is overtly woody, the elements are very impressive. It’s enticing and tasty—if unevolved—even now. Lovely black cherry, tar, coffee and sweet spice notes play on the nose and palate. But the wood expands much more than expected, progressively veiling the fine component parts. Closes long with full, solid but even tannins. This needs time and has the stuff to be a knockout if the wood recedes sufficiently. Best 2005–2012.

This powerfully built 2001 boasts a complex palate of aromas and flavors, ranging from tea and cocoa to leather, spice and cherries. The finish bodes well for the future, combining mouthwatering length and firm tannins with great fruit intensity. Drink 2010–2020. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A modern, creamy-textured Barolo, layered with new wood that needs some time to integrate with the fine underlying material. Tobacco, vanilla and cedar dominate ight now, but with time those scents should subside and make way for cherry and spice nuances. Try in 2010. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.

The 2007 Söri Rio Sordo is far more impressive than the 2006 edition. Warm temperatures and a long growing season have surely played an important part in developing the aromas of black fruit, sweet spice, plum and dried prune that come forward. The wine shows elegance and integration with a firm, unyielding tannic structure.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Once past some funky burnt-matchstick scents, this wine really shines, mixing cherry, leather and dried spices together in a richly textured, creamy wine that finishes with masses of soft tannins. Should be approachable by 2008, and mature gracefully until 2016 or beyond.
