Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Cadaretta’s largest production red is drinking beautifully in this exceptional vintage. It seems to be moving into midlife softness, with a well-integrated blend of plums, cassis and black cherries, highlighted with clove and coffee. Complex and detailed, its tannins are grainy and dark, adding heft and gravitas to the fruit.

Cadaretta, with serious money and an established winemaker (Virginie Bourgue) at the helm, is going to be a player in Walla Walla. The first release is this excellent Syrah, sourced from Pepper Bridge, Stonetree and Alder Ridge. The immediate impression is that the nose has got a lot of floral attributes, followed with hints of spice. The fruit is dark and the tannins show some green edges. The wine has good grip, and some tarry notes in the finish. In the glass more of the toasted new oak flavors emerge, a very pretty framework for a rather substantial wine.

Nicely styled, showing lots of licorice in the nose and in the flavors. Blackberry and plum, cedar and spice are gently introduced, and the balance of fruit, acid and tannin is taut and proportionate.

An Aussie-style blend of 78% Sauvignon Blanc and 22% Sémillon. It’s been a real success for Cadaretta, and this is in the same mold as previous efforts. Tasted just prior to release, it was loaded with crisp, primary fruit flavors of green apple, melon and grapefruit. Nice texture, and just a hint of barrel toast too.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Merlot is 100% varietal, a blend of Horse Heaven Hills, Yakima Valley and Walla Walla Valley fruit. A hint of leather is wrapped into tight, lightly smoky red fruit. Red licorice and a streak of iron ore can also be detected; it is unusually tight and muscular for Merlot.

Seven vineyards contribute to this Syrah-dominated blend, which also includes small amounts of Mourvèdre, Sangiovese, Counoise and Grenache. Spicy and smooth, it has a pleasing softness on the palate, with suggestions of bacon fat, followed by tart berry fruit annotated with clove highlights.

A one-of-a-kind 100% Sangiovese from Cadaretta, this pure and expressive wine shows concentrated strawberry fruit presented in a balanced style with acids and tannins in perfect proportion. There is no hint of new oak, just a softening from barrel aging, and a lovely presentation of the pretty young fruit.

Cadaretta’s Windthrow is a limited-release southern Rhône blend of 37% Syrah, 27% Mourvèdre, 18% Counoise and 18% Grenache. The fruit is just ripe enough, clean and juicy, with a spicy and tart mouthfeel. What’s most surprising is the length—the wine seems to gather itself and push on through a full-throttle finish, adding nougat and vanilla custard to the mix.

This Aussie-style blend is 79% Sauvignon Blanc and 21% Sémillon. It’s lush and bright, with fresh flavors of pineapple and grapefruit. Showing firm acids and nice nuances of tangerine, orange and lemon peel, it’s very refreshing and textural. The finish adds spice and a bit of cinnamon.

A limited-production Bordeaux blend, this is a vineyard/barrel selection by now-departed Cadaretta winemaker Virginie Bourgue. It’s silky and deep, with penetrating black fruits and toasted, roasted coffee barrel flavors. Seductive and smooth, this is an elegant wine that warrants cellaring.
