Very aromatic, with lots of tropical fruit, citrus, spice and lees notes. Intensely fruity and spicy, really sears the palate with flavor, like the essence of fruit, but bone dry. A wonderful, complex, powerful wine with a long, rich finish.

The heat of the vintage took its toll, giving us a soft, melted wine whose deficit of acidity makes the superripe cherry and raspberry flavors taste syrupy sweet. There’s no getting around this problem, even though the wine is not without its charms. Drink now.

If only this wine had greater structure, it would earn a higher score, but as it is, it’s too soft and sugary, which makes it taste like the filling of a pie or tart. Raspberries, cherries and figs are the flavors, with the smoke and caramel of oak. Drink now.

If you like oak, you’ll love the toast, caramel, butterscotch and crème brûlée flavors in this Chard. There’s apricot and pineapple fruit, too, but that oak is the dominant taste.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As usual, this is a wine that doesn’t show well in youth. Compare it to some of the flashier coastal bottlings, and it comes across as heavy and earthy. It’s thick in tannins, but the core of rich cherry fruit and lively acidity bode well. This is probably a wine to cellar through this decade.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows the earthiness that often marks young Calera Pinot, which makes it less flashy but more elegant and food-friendly than many more expensive wines. The herb-infused cherry, raspberry and cola flavors are ripe and succulent, but acidity is a little deficient, so this may not be the most ageable wine.

Pretty peach and tropical fruit aromas, enveloped in smoky oak, are acompanied by leesy notes. Drinks easy and soft, with plenty of fruity flavors and vanilla-oaky contrasts. The polished finish is pleasant.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sometimes a young Pinot is deceptive. This wine is young and silky, supple and fruity and has some sharp acidity, but it doesn’t overwhelm. It’s the kind of wine that doesn’t overshadow food. But it’s excellent Pinot. The depth of flavor and long finish suggest aging possibilities, but there’s no reason not to drink and enjoy it now.

This wine is too soft, which makes the ripe cherry and raspberry flavors taste syrupy and in fact sweet, although it may be technically dry.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With some firm tannins, this is a wine to decant for a few hours or age for up to eight years before it starts to lose its luscious fruit. The flavors are expansive, ranging from cherries and raspberries to cola, tamari and cinnamon spice. With its silky texture and long, spicy finish, this is a top-notch Pinot. Best now–2010.
