With 14% Malbec and Syrah thrown in, this Carmenère is fresh, tightly wound and balanced. It starts with controlled herbal-vegetal aromas along with cherry, raspberry and tarragon. The palate has olive and spice to accent deep black fruit, and the finish is a little oaky but not what you’d call overdone or drying. Full-bodied and textbook for the variety and appellation.

Blueberry, citrus peel and licorice work the nose on this interesting but limited Malbec. The palate seems racier and more acidic than one might expect, with snappy black cherry and berry flavors. Oak rises up on the finish, leaving chocolate in spades. Has critical mass but only medium depth and complexity.

Oaky and dark, with aromas of shoe polish, hard spice and black fruit. It’s plump and slightly creamy on the tongue, with flavors of resin, black plum and raspberry. Finishes rather oaky and peppery for a wine with modest fruit and little varietal character. With 14% Malbec, Merlot and Cab Sauvignon.

Very nicely done, with full-force berry and plum balancing off mild vegetal/herbal aromas. The palate is ripe, round and textured, with alluring plum, berry, leather and vanilla flavors. It folds in cinnamon and pepper on the finish to bring everything full circle, while keeping the herbal element under control; 60% Carmenère and 40% Malbec.

Starts with earthy, blackberry aromas and deeper notes of plum preserves and blueberry. Picks up some pretty blackberry and cherry notes in the chewy core, then turns rich and solidly tannic in the finish. Needs time. —S.H.

There’s something earthy, sharp, and green in the nose, and airing doesn’t bring out hidden fruit. Sharp and thin. The spicy midpalate contains a trace of berry-cherry fruit, and then it turns dusty and tannic on the finish. Might soften with a year or so of cellaring. —S.H.

Smoky almost to the point of being a one-noter, but as it warms the heavy toast gives way to apple, orange and coconut flavors. The savior is prime acidity, which creates a raciness that rivals the woodiness. Imported by RM Imports.

A perfectly good Chardonnay, one with lemon curd, butter, peach and melon on the nose. The mouth offers apple and a hint of orange, while the finish is ripe, bordering on sweet, with a little bit of creaminess. Great for everyday drinking.
