Aromatherapy in a bottle. Soothing cedar, sweet caramel, molasses and toasted coconut are comforting. Chocolate and tobacco flavors integrate well with soft tannins.

Mildly leafy, with root beer and red fruit comprising the nose. Basic but fresh in the mouth, with cherry and berry flavors, medium tannins and a laudable mouthfeel. Middle-of-the-road in terms of power, with finishing notes of tobacco and smoke.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A touch timid in how it doles out slight raspberry and light oak aromas. And that’s in front of a mellow, quiet palate that offers basic berry flavors and not much more. Far from the most cushioned, lush wine going; it hits firmly and evenly, like a welterweight from a past era.

Roasted and stemmy on the nose, with a brambly background. The palate has a normal, midland mouthfeel and crusty, clipped flavors of baked plum mixed with tomato and herbs. Finishes lightly herbal. Tastes like a mass-production wine.

Campo Viejo Gran Reserva is normally an excellent wine, but in 2002 it’s good but unspectacular. The nose is solid yet not real precise or alluring, while the flavors of plum, black cherry and cola are about as ripe and appealing as one might expect from a cool, rainy year. A little thin on the finish, but lively as a whole. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For unafflicted plum and berry character, this young, fresh Rioja has the goods. The sweet berry and cherry palate is at peak drinking condition, and the finish runs longer than expected courtesy of a beam of bright acidity. A wine with Zinfandel-like charm. Imported by Pernod Ricard USA.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Alluring cherry and berry aromas show a touch of candied sweetness, yet overall the bouquet is magnetically attractive. And the palate is deep and spicy, with tons of red fruit accented by toast and chocolate. And as far as complexity notes go, there’s rose petal, lavender and leather. Eminently drinkable; excellent quality to price ratio. Imported by Allied Domecq Wines USA.

The color was transparent, as were the flavors. It’s a bit of a thin wine, with some strawberry fruit and accents of wood and char on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This tasty Rioja has an almost chewy feel. Tart dried fruits, leather, licorice and menthol oak aromas and flavors come together well in this—especially at this age—fairly full-bodied wine. Dark and handsome, it still has some tannins to shed, and finishes long and dry. Drink now–2007. —M.M.

A nominally sweet red-candy note helps define the upbeat nose, and it all makes sense once you know that there’s 20% Garnacha in the wine along with 75% Tempranillo and Mazuelo. With airing you get nice pie cherry and raspberry flavors, while the mouthfeel is juicy and correct. A good wine for pizza or hamburgers. Imported by Pernod Ricard, USA.
