Fresh and dry, this drinks easily and invites glass after glass. There are aromas of white flower, stone, peach and pear and the wine is fresh and tonic on the close.

Here is a clean and easy-to-drink Grigio with notes of citrus candy, Granny Smith apple and stone fruit. It’s everything you should expect from a wine at this price point. The mouthfeel is lean but refreshing acidity comes through at the end.

For a meatier, heavier bargain red, head south to the sun-drenched Puglia region. Canaletto sources fruit to make a wine that delivers bold fruit, black cherry, roasted espresso bean and moist earth. The wine is aged 12 months in oak to shape a softer wine accented by exotic spice, cinnamon and sandalwood. This is the kind of wine you want on a chilly winter evening at home in front of a roaring fire.

Big minerality makes for an extremely food-friendly wine with candy-like lemon-lime powder and mouth-puckering tartness. Imported by Vias Imports.

Ripe fruit, with peach and pear notes on the nose. Palate full of flavor with almond, peach and mineral elements. Good balance and a clean finish. Lots of complexity for an inexpensive wine. Best Buy.

Quite round and fruity, this easy drinker is almost sweet. Displaying tropical fruit, honey and pear-nectar aromas and flavors, it turns warmly spicy on the finish. A simple wine, but with great potential appeal as a “transitional varietal” for drinkers moving up from jugs. Also indicates that Puglia can produce competitive everyday wines, especially if they further elevate acidity for a bit more spine.

This easy-to-drink, supple, jammy cherry bomb is a fine, inexpensive choice to accompany spring and summer grilling. The very ripe cherry fruit shows a slightly tart, earthy element on the back end that adds a bit of complexity, and will stand up to charcoal-broiled foods.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Ripe cherry and dark plum fruit, light tobacco and cedar accents mark this pleasant, medium-weight wine. It’s a good basic red and will have wide appeal with its round, supple mouthfeel. Generally a workaday, inexpensive Italian red, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a good pizza/pasta choice. It’s not to be confused with the Tuscan Montepulciano. In Tuscany, Montepulciano is a place; here, it’s a grape. Here, the place (Abruzzo) is the province on Italy’s east central coast.

Primitivo is Zinfandel, according to University of California at Davis ampelographers (students of grape DNA), but that doesn’t mean they taste the same, as this medium-weight southern Italian version proves. Dark cherry, leather, coffee and cocoa predominate here, with some nice spice, tar and a slight black pepperiness (maybe that’s the Zin gene) on the finish.
