Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a transition wine for Canoe Ridge, whose talented winemaker, John Abbott, did the crush but left before finishing it. It’s a good effort, but not as lush as previous vintages. The fruit is pretty and the wine balanced, with nice flavors of plum and dried cherries, and intriguing hints of tobacco leaf in the finish.

Opens with a blast of toasty French oak, mingled with fancy black-currant, blackberry and chocolate aromas. Rich and mouth-filling, with a long finish. The dusty tannins suggest mid- to long-term aging.

Here you get the whole fruit bowl. Melon, pear and apple aromas with some fresh floral notes are followed by banana, cantaloupe and pear flavors. Some light oak spreads across the finish. All in all the feel is a touch flat; brighter acidity would give it an extra boost that it could use.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Canoe Ridge’s varietal Cabernet Franc has some good punch to the nose, then comes into a fairly soft mid-palate. Fruit flavors revolve around raspberry and cassis, and are streaked with hints of coffee grounds. But in the end it seems a bit generic, with stiff, earthy tannins wrapping things up.

This Bordeaux blend includes 15% Merlot, and has a curious mushroomy scent reminiscent of Bordeaux. Mostly it shows round, pleasant, forward, somewhat generic red fruit flavors that don’t come into any particular focus.

Concentrated and stylish, this is a potent Merlot with sharp, ripe, tight fruit flavors. Compact plum, black cherry and cassis fruit is wrapped in juicy acids and plenty of coffee-flavored barrel toast. Still young and a bit hot, this wine needs several hours of breathing time to really open up.

This rich, ripe wine explodes with juicy cassis fruit. It shows fine concentration and plenty of spicy oak. Masterful winemaking; there’s a beautiful sense of balance and just flat-out gorgeous fruit. Canoe Ridge is on a roll, and wines of this caliber are rare at this price. Editors’ Choice.

This is truly dry, yet quite flavorful. There’s great texture in the mouth, which the winemaker attributes to the quality of the fruit. The acidity is natural, refreshing and succulent; the citrus flavors conjure up lemon, lime and grapefruit, with a pleasing roundness in the center palate. Long and clean, this is simply outstanding.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tart and smoky, showing some brick around the edges and a bit of volatility in the nose and mouth. This does not have the depth of fruit to support the oak and acid; it’s chalky and tart at the same time. Though not a bad wine by any means, it is not really living up to its reserve status.
