This is a fabulous wine with robust and rich extraction and enduring aromas of dark spice, ash, coffee, blackberry and mesquite barbecue. The texture the wine imparts in the mouth is dense and opulent and it is lasting and persistent on the finish. This Ripasso is a small step from being an Amarone. —M.L.

In Valpolicella, many homes are built around a central courtyard or “corte.” Corte Antica Amarone is an open and personable wine with some herbal notes backed by red fruit, spice, toasted almonds and rich concentration. The wine is smooth, full and generous on the close.

Here’s a plump and very fruit forward Ripasso with aromas of dried current berry, cherry and an interesting green element that recalls garden herbs or dried hay. It delivers a deliciously thick and chewy texture with soft, velvety tannins. —M.L.
