Big, brawny and not entirely welcoming: this Priorat heavyweight is full of licorice and cool black-fruit and cola aromas. The palate is hard as nails, and only time will tell if it softens and finds a sweeter spot. We think it will; in five years it should trade in the current burnt steak notes and fierce tannins for softer touches and more complex flavors.

Despite the hot year this shows encouraging depth, ripeness and a berry-driven nose. And if you cherish agility and subtleties more than pure power, this has the goods; it’s full of zesty plum and dark berry flavors and the finish is long and fresh. Not a desperate heavyweight with too much extract or oak; instead it boasts finesse and a lightness of being. Drink now.

Time will only help this tough, rough Priorato that isn’t offering a whole lot now besides tannin, dark-fruit flavors and searing oak. The flavors are middle-of-the-road in terms of friendliness and complexity, so expect a forward, hard-hitting wine. Should be more revealing in a few years.
