It tastes of raspberry juice with a healthy spoonful of white sugar. The fundamentals are there, though. Makes you wish it were dry, like table wine ought to be.

This wine’s winning nose had wide appeal, with tea, leather, rose, cinnamon and root beer accents on lively cherry fruit. But tasters differed about the rest: Some felt the wine failed to deliver on the promise, turning dry and lean, too leathery and tangy. To others the ripe feel, handsomely-accented sweet fruit and long finish were excellent.

If there’s a single common element in the wine’s from the Pisoni Vineyard, it’s a hint of the untamed woods—underbrush, or in this case a peppery mushroominess—accompanied by lush fruit. Creamy, supple and richly textured in the mouth, this microproduction wine (127 cases) is worth seeking out.
