A balanced wine, with dusty wood and herb aromas and firm tannins but also good, juicy fruit. At the end, there are reminders of old-style Dão in its dryness and toughness. —R.V.

Overripe fruit and sweetness yield a somewhat clumsy wine, but there are good deep flavors and tarry fruit. It would be great with hearty food, as long as you don’t think about it too much. —R.V.

This is a huge, powerful wine, from the almost black color to the aromas of tarry fruit, and the flavors of wood and sweet blackberries. It will certainly age well—10 years or more. —R.V.
