Located at the foot of the town of San Giorgio in western Valpolicella, Boscaini’s top cru seems to have been affected by the hot vintage. Aromas include ripe cherry with strawberry comfiture, dried prune, raisin and finely etched mineral tones. It’s slightly lighter in color and concentration but slides like silk over the palate and is not cloying or too chewy.

This ripasso has distinctive elements of mature fruit, chopped herb, black stone and toasted oak. The wine is soft and plush in the mouth with a very pleasant and slight sweet cherry and menthol-like finish. Imported by Tuscany Import.

La Preosa ripasso opens with luscious red fruit, leathery, earthy tones, tobacco, cola and black stone. The wine has a smooth and soft feel and would pair wonderfully with beef stew or sausage. Imported by Tuscany Import.

Amarone San Giorgio offers aromas of cherry, spice and clove but doesn’t have the natural intensity of other wines from this vintage. It’s more neutral and shy from an aromatic point of view although the mouthfeel is vibrant and crisp.

There’s a strong oak component here that adds a layer of chocolate, vanilla and spice over ripe red fruit and bursting cherry. This ripasso is also characterized by slight bitterness and astringency in the mouth. Imported by Tuscany Import.

Amarone San Giorgio has shown great improvement over the past few vintages and this expression is redolent of blackberry, spice, leather, mature cherry and Spanish cedar. There’s harmony and elegance here, followed by a big, chewy mouthfeel.

Here’s a simple and lean Ripasso that could pair with white beans and grilled sausage. There are bright fruit flavors here and enough acidity to cut through meat dishes, yet the wine is fundamentally easy and informal overall.
