Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An oak-aged vino joven with a nose of cherry, rubber and raspberry. At first taste, it seems overtly buttery, as if the young oak were sitting atop the wine. As you get into it, that oak seems less obvious and more integrated. Still, it’s a touch bland, yet competent.

Serious in size, power and oak, but it doesn’t take long to determine that Rodero’s ’04 reserva is a more complete and pleasing wine. That said, this Ribera with 15% Cabernet and 10% Merlot is still a success; it is mostly coffee and chocolate on the nose, and then saturated berry, savory flavors and lemony oak on the palate. Big and bawdy red wine; needs another few years to settle.

Good and clean, and seemingly more ripe than overripe. Aromas of black grapes and plums are dark and fruity, while the palate runs syrupy and rich, with creamy notes of vanilla intermixed with blackberry and the like. Finishes like a sundae, with vanilla, carob and coconut. Imported by Billington Imports.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Potent and promising on the nose, with rich, deep black fruit, coffee and deftly applied oak. As it airs out it only gets better, with driving berry fruit flavors, thickness, structure and trimmings like clove, baking spice and exotic spices. Long and pure on the finish, and outstanding as a whole. The best Rodero wine we’ve rated to date; drink now or hold through 2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very fruity, forward wine that’s rich and friendly and quite delicious. The nose tips things off with black plum, chocolate and other sweet, dense aromas, while the palate is full of boysenberry, raspberry, cherry and fine tannins and overall balance. Simply put, this is a fine RDD with vibrancy and lots of quality. Drink now–2018.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For an ’07, this shows nice fruit and a direct, honest approach. The nose offers up spice and berry aromas along with some buttery oak, and that creamy woodiness carries onto the palate and blends well with juicy, crisp red fruit flavors that are representative of the vintage and region. Drink now–2014.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fairly heavily roasted on the nose, with a ton of toasted oak and rubber. Fortunately the palate is less roasty-toasty, and thus you get full black cherry flavors along with an herbal, leafy hint. Mellow and fairly pure on the finish, with a dash of tobacco.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sweet and solid, with true-form tree bark, root vegetable and black fruit aromas. Ripe strawberry and raspberry carry the healthy palate toward a smooth, juicy, satisfying finish. Very well balanced and correct at all major checkpoints.

84 Carmelo Rodero 2000 Crianza (Ribera Del Duero); $TK. Strong and oaky, without much finesse to the fast-paced nose and palate. Basic red fruit and sharp-cutting acidity defines the mouth. Rounds out some late in the game, but still it only goes so far.

Toasty and solid, with cherry, kirsch and herbal aromas. The palate is expressive and clean, with tangy, healthy fruit that shows touches of citrus along with oak and chocolate. Seems a bit buttery on the finish, but the bet here is that it will fade with time. Nicely structured and properly tannic. Drink now through 2007. Imported by Billington Imports.
