From a region making a major play in Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit got beautifully ripe, moving beyond citrus into rich peach and pear. Yet the cool nights have preserved fresh acidity. Distinctive and compelling.

The cherry-berry flavors and oaky notes are backed by firm, tough tannins. Finishes with a gritty scour. May soften with a year or so of bottle age.

Score one for Sonoma Valley and this winery, as the ’97 exceeds previous efforts. Lots of enticing deep-berry aromas touched up with leather, dill, and an array of other spices and herbs, even oregano. It’s one of those rock-solid winners where the whole is more profound than the parts.

This wine is fresh and clean, with bright acids that cleanse the palate. It’s not especially powerful in fruit, with suggestions of citrus, apple and peach, and snaps to an abrupt finish.

An intriguing wine from grapes grown close to San Francisco. Tastes more like a field blend than like 100% Zin, with pepper, currant and blackberry flavors. Some residual sugar has been kept in, making it drink like a liqueur. Well-made in a big, juicy, thick style.

This solid Merlot pleases for its ripe blackberry and chocolate flavors and sweetly rich tannins. It’s a big wine, but easy to drink, especially with a perfectly grilled ribeye steak. May even benefit from a year or two in the cellar.

This is an everyday-style wine, with plenty of black-currant and blackberry flavors and not much oak. It’s dry, with enough sweet berry fruit to satisfy, while the tannins are soft enough for immediate consumption.

There are some pretty cherry and blackberry flavors wrapped in very thick, astringent tannins. You’ll also find a tough earthiness that lasts through the dry, gritty finish.

Distinctly warm-country Zin, with its strong flavors of cassis, plum pudding and chocolate that come close to raisiny Port but successfully avoid it. As a result, it’s a rich and complexly delicious wine. It’s also very dry, and the alcohol is controlled.

From 109-year-old vines, an old-style field blend with It’s robust, full of body and flavor, rich and powerful. Runs wild with fruity flavors and stains the glass with thick syrupy cathedrals. —S.H.
