Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
According to the paperwork, it’s made from Carignan, and the wine shows that variety’s rustic, wild berry nature. It’s not terribly complex, but there’s something about the savory fruit, silky texture and dry acidity that captures the essence of rosé.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
I’ve liked this wine over the years because of the Bordeaux-like elegance it achieves without losing Zin’s wild, briary side. Here, the wine is softer and a little sweeter than in the past, given the hot vintage, but it’s still balanced and rich in true Dry Creek Zinny character.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
They say the vines are 75 years old, head-trained and dry-farmed. That’s winespeak for intensity, which this Zin has plenty of. The concentrated cherry, raspberry, blackberry, root beer and chocolate flavors are wrapped into a soft, velvety mouthfeel that finishes somewhere between dry and just off-dry.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Made in an old-fashioned, rustic style, the kind of Zin you used to be able to buy in jugs straight from the winery. It’s acidic, harsh and raisiny.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very fruity, juicy Zin from Shelton, this time from one of her consistent sources of organically grown grapes in Mendocino, just north of Ukiah. The “wild” name comes from the wild yeast fermentation the wine goes through, helping to coax raspberry, cassis, black pepper and spice out of the wine.

Sleek, plush and supple on the palate, with plenty of lush chocolate, plum, coffee, vanilla, black cherry and spice flavors. Elegant and velvety to the end, the wine shows good length and integration.

Pretty plush, with a racy blend of black cherry, blackberry, cola, cassis, anise and herb flavors. They’re couched in tangy acidity and smooth, rich tannins. Big yet elegant—really ripe, really good.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Plush and smooth, with a fine array of pretty cherry, herb, toast and spice flavors. The tannins are a bit powdery, but the flavors are good, finishing with a hint of licorice, bright cherry and spice.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Not a ton of fruit on the nose but a respectable single-vineyard from Zin master Carol Shelton made from organically grown, dry-farmed 92-year-old vines, coaxed into a spicy, brambly wine from a very unusual appellation.
