Younger and a bit more raw than the ’03, and the oak is sticking out more boldly, but this should be a fine bottle in much the same fashion as its predecessor in a year or so. There’s a purity throughout that’s outstanding.

An impressive Cabernet, the winery’s best effort in years. Dry and firm in tannins, it shows a Bordeaux-esque elegance and balance, with sage and cedar notes framing underlying red currant fruit. Now through 2012.

Better known for Edna Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Carpe Diem now turns to Napa Cab. Although it’s a clean Cab with some elegance, it’s lean and herbal, lacking the opulence Napa Cab ought to have.

There’s a sweaty, leathery note to this Pinot, or something suggestive of the rich, mushroomy undergrowth in a dark forest. The wine is full-bodied and bold in cola, coffee and cherry flavors. Very dry, with racy acidity so typical of the valley. Might develop complexity with a few years in bottle. Tasted twice.

Notable for high, stimulating acidity and purity of flavor, this lovely Chard brims with lime, mineral, white peach and apricot flavors, wrapped into a lush, creamy texture. It’s an elegant, classy wine that improves as it breathes in the glass.

Here’s a crisp and elegantly structured wine. The citrus and apple flavors have an earthy, mineral edge and are accompanied by good acidity, leading to a clean and vibrant mouthfeel. There is, however, an almost excessive dryness.

The ’05, as befits the cool vintage, is very dry and crisply elegant, with crushed cherry, raspberry and root beer flavors boosted by a squirt of lime juice, enriched by sweet vanilla and oak. Best now–2008.

Cool weather has yielded a somewhat thin, acidically crisp Pinot that doesn’t offer all the flavor you’d like. It’s showing mint, raspberry, cherry and dill flavors, and finishes very dry.

Here’s a nice, everyday Pinot Noir. It’s dry and silky, with flavors of cherries, cola, leather and sandalwood that lead to a long, spicy finish. Ready now.

A very distinctive wine, rich and powerful. Marked by well-ripened flavors of pears and tropical fruits, dense and concentrated, with near-perfect acids. A lovely coating of oak adds spicy, smoky complexities.
