Although the aromas carry more than a hint of bell pepper, this green element takes a back seat on the palate to rich currant and earth flavors and just a hint of toasty oak. “We’re in the ripe fruit business, not the lumber business,” jokes Zaccheo. Firmly structured, with good grip on the finish. Drink 2005-2010.

Aromas of superripe cherries burst from the glass, folding in notes of chocolate and pain grillé. The Sangiovese (100%) was clearly harvested very ripe, with an almost Port-like character to it and creamy tannins, but it still retains good acidity.

The first vintage for this wine, a 60-40 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet, has yielded a rich, currant-laden wine that picks up plenty of earthy and tobacco nuances on the nose. Again, the texture is creamy-smooth, the finish chewy and firm.

Rich, smoky, pure and encouraging from the first take all the way to the back end. There’s lots of zest and spunk to this racy yet round Chianti. The palate is full of blackberry and the feel is supple. It’s totally ripe and tannic, with notes of vanilla, chocolate and espresso forming the base. Oaky but integrated; modern but traditional enough.

Raw, extremely redolent of blueberries and strawberries with a tiny lactic note, this wine tastes much younger than it really is. It’s also on the ripe side with some jelly and jam-like nuances and a solid core of in-your-face fruit. It has rich, dense extraction and simple, fruit-driven flavors. This Riserva has always performed very well in past vintages.

Pretty wildflower and honey aromas grace the bouquet of this yellow-gold wine, which tosses up flavors of citrus, underripe pineapple and peach. Finishes dry and clean, and not too heavy. It’s medium-bodied at best, however, and loses intensity with airing.

Plenty of cherries and a large dose of not-so-toasty oak are the core of this medium-weight red. A slight earthiness on the nose and woody tannins on the back end frame a solid palate that’s full of cherry and vanilla flavors.

The dark fruit and toasty oak are well meshed on the nose, with a rich, creamy-floral character. Full and rich blackberry and toast flavors are bold and appealing on the palate, and licorice, toast and dark-plum elements play out on the finish of this satisfying offering. Drink now through 2005.
