Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Easy and direct, but appealing for its soft, silky texture and lush waves of raspberry parfait, cherry pie filling, oatmeal raisin cookie, vanilla granola and cinnamon spice flavors. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine is a blend of Dijon clones, which bring pure, jammy fruit. Paired with the older Pommard, the result is a meaty, full-bodied Pinot. There’s an earthiness to the cherries and berries, and the wine is complex and probably ageworthy for six to eight years. This polished wine exemplifies the art of blending, although it’s a single-vineyard wine that vividly captures a sense of place.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tart in acidity, and bone dry, this young Pinot has exotic and complex flavors of cola and cherries, with tannins from the bitter skins and a touch of smoky oak. It’s very finely constructed, but the tartness is insistent. May mellow in the bottle.

Tastes quite sweet, like a nice, soft, rich red wine that had a couple teaspoons of white sugar added. That in turn makes the ripe cherry flavors taste jammy, more like a dessert wine than a table wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Ripe and crisp in acidity, this 100% Pinot Gris comes from a single vineyard in this highly regarded Santa Barbara County appellation. The wine never saw oak, so the pineapple, apple butter, mango and vanilla flavors come entirely from the grapes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A hot, rather brutal wine. High alcohol combines with high, hard tannins to make for a real textural challenge, despite interesting cherry, licorice and Canadian bacon flavors. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Soft, rich and heavy for a Pinot Noir, with ripe, forward flavors of raspberries, cherries, vanilla and cedar, and notes of violets, cocoa dust and orange zest. Good now with beef stew.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tastes pretty much like Carr’s other 2007 Pinots, only oakier. The woody flavors give a heaviness to the underlying blackberries, cherries, currants and pepper spice. Drink over the next few years.

Carr’s 2005 Turner Vineyard was a very exciting discovery for me, and while their Three Vineyards isn’t quite in the same league, it’s still a seriously good wine. Shows full-throttle Santa Rita atttibutes of crisp balance, intensely ripe fruit, great mouthfeel and limited ageability. The palate loves the cherries, raspberries, cola, spicy vanilla and smoky flavors. The wine comes from some of the best vineyards: Ashley’s, Clos Pepe and Turner.

Identical scores from all tasters for this big, dark, rich wine, which is filled with oaky, blackberry and mocha flavors. It’s big, tannic and dense now, heavy in the mouth, but is likely to soften and turn supple with a few years in the bottle.
