Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Napa and Sonoma fruit shares the spotlight with Lodi grapes to produce this soft, simple wine. Filled with summery, appley sweetness, it’s spicy-peppery clean, with a honeyed finish that tastes like vanilla custard.

Pretty good for the price. It’s dry and balanced, with cherry, raisin, tobacco and oak flavors. Picks up a couple points for smoothness.

Shows the briary, brambly taste and texture of a mountain Zin, with rustic flavors of fresh wild berries, mocha, herbs and pepper. A solid, honest country wine, at an affordable price.

Opens with scents of cherries and chocolate, with a dusty, earthy streak. Turns fruity and overly sweet in the mouth, with flavors of cassis liqueur. The tannins and acids are rustic.

Minty and sharp, with a menthol edge to the cherries, but the wine is crisp and has a polished, silky texture, so it’s pretty good.

From Delta grapes, an affordable wine that offers plenty of body and flavor. Big, jammy tastes of plums and blackberries wrapped in a rich, thick texture. Sure, it’s a country-style wine, but it’s an honest, good one.

This is as good as many Merlots that cost much more. The fruity flavors are nicely set off by rich tannins, and the mouthfeel is expressive.

You won’t see it on the label, but the grapes for this dry blush come from such esteemed cool-climate vineyards as Parmalee, Durell and Saralee’s. The terroir imparts refreshing acidity, while the wine shows fine dryness, at a time when so many rosés finish sweet. Pinot flavors of cherries and rose petals combine with spicy vanilla to produce a polished, Provencal-style wine. Amazingly, the wine was entirely fermented and aged in stainless steel.

Wine lovers who want to figure Pinot out but are on a limited budget would do well to buy this one. It’s properly dry and silky, with cherry, strawberry, cola, tea and cinnamon clove flavors. The wine, made from components from Mendocino to Santa Barbara, is a testament to the fine art of blending.
