Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A little bit of out-of-place oak guards the nose, making you think that it’s just popcorn, peanuts and Cracker Jack. But beyond the sweet, toasty character there’s tropical fruit, solid acidity and good overall balance.

Lapostolle’s basic Cab scores big in the fine ’01 vintage. It features a deep nose of tire rubber, blackberry and rusticity. The palate is high-octane and deep, with plenty of ripe, tannic black fruit. And the finish is round and lengthy. It should age well for a couple of years. Editors’ Choice.

At first this is aggressive, with an aromatic note of wet dog along with blueberries. But soon it finds its legs and opens to display chocolate, espresso and a big batch of black plum and blackberry. The finish has full tannins and some coffee-like flavor. Currently it’s wall-to-wall big, but it should settle down in no time and become a good red to drink on any occasion.

Surely one of the finest Chardonnays in Chile. The balance, level of toast, and depth make it world class. Peach, buttered toast and nuts make for a fine palate, while the finish is warm and dotted with the flavor of toasted almonds and walnuts. Pretty and defined.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a new wine from one of Chile’s most consistent producers, and it’s quite the saturated bruiser. The color is deep purple, while the nose is raw and heavy, with deep fruit and plenty of bacon-like character. The mouth is like blackberry pie, while the feel is full and tannic, although not at all offensive or tough. The finish is dark, brooding and just a little bitter. An interesting new entry to Chile’s roster, and one that’s very well oaked.

As good as this winery’s more elite Cuvée Alexandre. Represents one of the best values in the world of Cabernet. Clean, expressive spicy fruit in the nose. Weightless and ripe in the mouth, with a soft, vanilla-tinged ending. For a winery known for powerful oak treatment, this one is mild and is drinkable right away. Best Buy.

Black cherry and mocha kick it off, while deep sniffers may uncover some eucalyptus and basil. Very supple and creamy, with seemingly edible plum and chocolate flavors gracing the full-bodied palate. Substantially complex for a wine this big and easy.

Firm, toasty aromas blend well with cherry and plum notes. The palate is healthy in feel, with good depth and balance. Tastes lightly herbal, but the heavy lifting is handled by black fruit and chocolate flavors. Peppery on the finish and very solid as a whole.

Black and crusty on the nose, with char, smoke, wild blackberry and chocolaty aromas. The palate is full and offers the right tannic grip, while blackberry, bitter chocolate and peppery flavors finish with gravitas. A full-bodied and lusty varietal wine, probably the best of its type from Chile.

Dense as a brick, with deep blackberry, prune, earth and chocolate aromas. Huge and multilayered, but already exhibiting perfect structure and integrated oak and spice flavors. Pure and exact; along with the 2001 this is Clos Apalta at its finest. Imported by Moët Hennessy USA.
