Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Cascina Adelaide always stands out in a crowd of Barolos thanks to the overall intensity of its Nebbiolo characteristics. Thanks to careful winemaking techniques, Preda takes that extra step: the fruit is brighter here and the spice notes are noticeably more piquant. You’ll also taste fine mineral notes, violets and green olive.

Slightly disjointed at first, this Barolo with fruit sourced from four vineyard sites, needs a few minutes to open in the glass. The wine offers tertiary aromas of cured beef, smoked bacon and white mushroom. Drink now.

Dolcetto Vigna Costa Fiore opens with a dense, modern appearance and big aromas of ripe fruit and mature blackberry. There’s also a touch of Band Aid or wet animal at the back that is barely perceptible now, but that may worsen with time. The wine is chewy and bright on the close.

Cascina Adelaide’s wines always stand out in a crowd thanks to the spicy oak elements this vintner proudly displays. Barolo Preda follows suit and opens with sweet clove and cinnamon backed by red cherry, cassis and prune. It’s a luscious, soft and textured wine that can be consumed soon (in 3–5 years) or aged longer in your cellar.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With a modern winery located at the foot of the picturesque town of Barolo, Cascina Adelaide proudly produces a bold and innovative interpretation of Barolo. This is a powerful and generous wine with big spice, berry, smoke and mineral tones. The cards it plays best, however, are intensity and persistency.

Like most wines from Cascina Adelaide, the oak footprint is hard to ignore. Spicy notes of clove and black pepper are wrapped around bright, plump cherry aromas. The wine is soft, approachable and easygoing overall.

Barolo Pernanno offers a bold and modern interpretation of Nebbiolo that sports tones of vanilla, cinnamon, toasted nut and spice framed around vertical tones of berry fruit, cola and balsam. In fact, there is a medicinal vein of chopped herb or mint that adds to the wine’s intensity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This hearty Barbera d’Alba exhibits a dark, toasty style with rich layers of generous fruit, blueberry and sweet Christmas spice. The oak element is evident and helps to tame the wine’s natural sharpness and acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Riserva Per Elen is showing an oaky, chunky side now and is reminiscent of a Tuscan red. That said, it does also exhibit subtle nuances of wet earth, licorice, rhubarb and root beer that are typical of Nebbiolo. Only the strong oak element is out of place and if it hasn’t integrated by now, one wonders if it ever will.

This impressive base Barolo from the dynamic Cascina Adelaide deploys an aromatic entourage of red currant, cherry, anise, black chocolate, clove and powdered allspice. It’s a pretty, luminous wine with a high level of concentration and density that offers a modern, plush feel. You can drink it now or wait another five years or so.
