Cedary oak and some barnyardy aromas on the nose. Shows its age and looks a bit brown. Some lean cranberry fruit, but overall it lacks intensity and persistence.

Here’s a sweet and luscious Barbera d’Alba with bright, thick concentration and immediate aromas of blackberry, cassis and cherry. There is an obvious wood element here that adds tones of spice, vanilla and tobacco. The high density and richness of the wine leaves purplish glycerin trails on the side of the glass.

Cascina Ballarin’s Barolo Bricco Rocca comes from the La Morra area of the Langhe and offers intense aromas of blue flower, violets, almond flowers, cinnamon and powdered licorice. This is a friendly Barbera d’Alba with a bright, ruby color, dense concentration and immediate aromas of black cherry, cassis, spice and dark chocolate. The wine is smooth and thick in the mouth with bright acidity on the close.

Impressive on so many levels, this vineyard designate Riserva Barolo shows excellent aromatic intensity and purity. Black cherry, plum, smoke, spice, asphalt, root beer and black tar are evident elements of the bouquet. The mouthfeel is full, firm and generous with a lingering vanilla fade.

Barolo Bricco Rocca still needs a few more years in the cellar to allow for full integrations of its spice, fruit, tobacco and mineral components. This beautiful wine is ripe with potential and the mouthfeel is plush and velvety with a wonderful fade of smoke and black fruit. Drink after 2018.

The nose makes this a pretty tough sell: sulfur, brett, even old shoe leather. Surprisingly, it comes around on the palate, where a complex dried-cherry flavor rides high above earthy undertones and a snap of licorice. Not really polished, but dry and smoky enough to warrant a taste.

Barolo Bricco Rocca boasts its own personality that puts more focus on broader, horizontal aromas of Graham cracker, dried grass and spice rather than vertical notes of cola and mint. Because of its unique traits, this wine would pair with stewed meats or baked white beans.
