This Roero offers density, pulp and dried fruit characteristics of prune, cassis and candied apricot. The nice thing is that the mouthfeel is rounded off by soft shadings of ground clove and cinnamon. Tart bitterness on the close implies a pairing with cheesy pasta.

Valmaggiore Riserva exhibits dark color and concentration with a mixed bag of aromas that spans dark fruit, prune, olive and caper. The mouth sees more richness and softness with a seductive touch of sweet spice on the finish.

Here is a plush and elegant Barbera d’Alba with bright fruit tones followed by graphite, a dash of exotic spice and pretty earthy nuances. The wine is bright and fruity in the mouth with cherry and blackberry on the close.

Here’s a Barbera d’Alba that is almost too much of a good thing. The wine is black and dense with inky concentration and thick aromas of smoked bacon, beef jerky and black fruit. You’ll also recognize tones of moist earth and wild mushroom. The fruit seems on the ripe and jammy side and the wine is smooth and thick in the mouth.

Piercing aromas of damp earth, cocoa and leather tell you most of what you need to know: This is the real deal. A mouth full of cherry and currant may not push finesse, but the fruit is merciless in its intensity. Juicy and full, with gas in the tank.

From the Monforte d’Alba area of Barolo, this deeply concentrated and rich wine is etched by sharp aromas of licorice, black pepper, red cherry, chocolate, leather and cigar box. The mouthfeel, with its soft, velvety tannins, is particularly pleasurable. Drink after 2015.

Here’s a ripe and soft expression of Roero Riserva with jammy notes of strawberry and raspberry folded within drying aromas of black mineral and exotic spice. Those telltale tannins are present although this expression is slightly more supple and plush.

A splendid wine that is both dense and complex. Very pleasing and well-integrated black-cherry, herb and toast aromas open to a mouthful of concentrated fruit, pepper, coffee, cake and more. Top-notch.

Quite dark in color, this densely aromatic and flavored red delivers lots of blackberry, plum and oak notes on the nose, followed by black-cherry and chocolate flavors. The mouthfeel is rich, but with a tangy acidity that keeps it lively, and the finish is long. It lacks the pedigree of some top Piedmontese wines but delivers more flavor and texture than many more familiar names.
