Hefty and earthy, with black cherry fruit, rubbing spice, creamy oak and ample horsey notes. This fairly weighty wine from Barabaresco’s respected Rabajà vineyard is dark and lively on the tongue, offering deep espresso and leather accents over tart fruit. Closes with substantial, structured tannins. This will reward cellaring. Drink 2005–2012.

Barolo Leon makes a wonderful first impression thanks to its aromas of ripe berry fruit, Indian spice, cola, licorice and ginger. There’s deep dimension and personality here and the wine ends with firmly polished tannins.

Here’s a bright Barbaresco that shows harmony and a sturdy, upfront quality thanks to its immediate aromatic intensity. Cherry, cola and spice are spread over the wine’s medium consistency and fine texture. There’s a touch of sourness and tight astringency on the finish.

Rabajà is among the most celebrated single vineyards in Barbaresco. The cru is known for its elegant yet muscular wines that perform well either aged or when drunk young. This expression exhibits notes of raspberry and cherry with shadings of vanilla and spice. It also shows some creamy or lactic notes of white chocolate that will dissolve within a few years.

This Barbaresco from the celebrated Rabajà cru presents aromas that are typical of the Nebbiolo grape: pressed blue flowers, tar, licorice, currants and wet earth. The presentation is correct but lacks specific definition although the wine is bright, polished and more focused in the mouth.

Slightly minty on the nose, but there’s also solid fruit backing it up in the form of ripe cherries. Fairly full-bodied, and firmly tannic on the finish, this wine could use some time in the cellar; try after 2008.

Here’s a dark and brooding Barolo with thick notes of hickory, smoke, dusty earth, plum, prunes and dark fruit. It’s an austere and, yes, “old fashion” wine with a beautifully polished mouthfeel and tight tannins. Hold onto this one for a few more years and drink with pheasant in a wild chestnut sauce.

Sorì Paolin is a faithful expression of Barbaresco tradition that has been enhanced by integrated layers of dried raspberry, red currant, vanilla bean, Spanish cedar, licorice and slate roof. It excels in the mouth by being full and generous, tonic and firm at the same time. Drink after 2012 with crown roast of lamb.

This is a big Barbaresco executed in a bold, modern style that can either be consumed immediately, or can be put aside to age in your cellar. Soft layers of spice, nutmeg and vanilla are enhanced by bursting flavors of cherry and blueberry. The wine is rich, dense and opulent overall.

From one of Barbaresco’s most celebrated vineyard crus, this ruby-colored wine exhibits loads of intensity and power in the form of cherry, cassis, leather, tar and cola. The wine’s compact, tonic mouthfeel would make a great companion to rich, sophisticated cuisine.
