Silvaner isn’t exactly the world’s best known grape variety, but if more of them were this good, it would gain a larger following. This wine is full-bodied and close to bone dry, with a creamy texture that carries its intense flavors of mineral and spice across the palate to a long, satisfying close.

Spindrift is the little winery that could, and makes excellent wines at consumer-friendly prices, from a variety of grapes that showcase all the strengths of Oregon. This lovely bottle is spicy and tart, yet full-flavored with a mix of lime, lemon, pineapple, pear and rind that gracefully runs into a midpalate that is full and spicy. The sharp acids keep it lively and refreshing, and the finish is nothing short of remarkable in a wine at this price.

Like a mildly spicy Traminer (one of its parent varieties), this Silvaner is medium-bodied, with modest pear and melon fruit and hints of ginger and pepper. Finishes short.

An exceptional example of what can be done with the humble Silvaner grape, this white is fresh and highly nuanced, with exotic galangal and Asian pear scents that lead to a crisp palate with Guanabana flavor. Dry, medium finish. Drink now to 2011.

This Silvaner shows more aromatic sophistication than most of its brethren; there’s baking spices, white flowers and apples on the nose with a saffron undertone. Crisp and earthy in the mouth, with good palate weight and a short to medium finish of lime peel. Drink up.

This wine reeks of intensity, from its powerful aromas of musk and dried pineapple to its somewhat monolithic honeyed fruit flavors and enormous sugar levels. It’s impressively concentrated—enough to stand up to almost any dessert you choose to throw at it.
