Peppy, even peppery, aromas get it going in a decidedly nonblowsy way. Apple fruit follows, but beyond some basic crisp, acid-driven flavor, there isn’t much nuance. The finish is surprisingly smooth, while the mouthfeel and bead are active. Tasty and satisfying. —M.S.

Adequate citrus and apple aromas lead into a flavor profile of green apple and lemon chiffon cake. Ample drive and persistence are positive, but the lasting taste impression is similar to a lemon-lime sports drink, which is refreshing but not very classy.

Kicks off with aromas of licorice gumdrop, wild flower and light stone fruits. Offers lime and sugared candy in the mouth along with a touch of banana and ripe apple. Finishes sweet, almost as if it were dessert. Fortunately some lively acidity keeps it fresh.

Elegant and restrained, this lithe, lean cava plays up dry citrus fruit and a precise mouthfeel while not going too heavy on the dosage. Flavors run toward apple and pineapple, and the finish is perfectly lean and clean. A lasting note of green apple is an encouraging final touch.

Dark and rosy, with a sweet strawberry fizz-like bouquet. The palate is firm and the flavor package delivers a full shot of ripe tangerine and nectarine. Yes, it tastes somewhat like a confection, meaning it’s rather sweet, but the balance and acids are right there, so it goes down well.

As under-$10 sparklers go, you’d be hard-pressed to find better than this medium-bodied and toasty version from Catalonia’s White Castle. The nose is mildly yeasty but basic, while the palate deals juicy apple and white-grape flavors propelled by fresh acidity. Virtuous yet basic. But who’s complaining?

An enticing nose of vanilla-cream, toast, red delicious apple, mown hay and wet, dark earth. The frothy, mouthwatering body holds a bit of tart apple and toast. Finishes long with an enjoyable touch of toast, if you can get past the acidity that will cut through any dish. —K.F.

Yeasty and round, with aromas of citrus and spent campfire. The palate runs toward peach and cantaloupe with a brown sugar coating. A bit sweet and candied late, yet mouthfilling and pleasant.

The bouquet is rubbery and the palate quite sweet. It has a good feel to it, but the flavors are drastically sweet, which overrides the balance it offers. Definitely for fans of sweet white wines. —M.S.

This producer is doing a very good job with its superaffordable, no-dosage cava. The nose is lightly floral, with the accent on apple blossom. The palate is solid and crisp, with appropriate white-fruit flavors. Crisp on the finish, with a lively feel. A pleasurable sipper for sure.
