Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Nice young Chianti with lots of black cherry fruit and brisk, sour acids that make your cheeks pucker. The wine is dry and balanced, and cries out for rich, decadent Italian food. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Simple and earthy, with aromas of sweet pipe tobacco and black cherries, and similar flavors. There’s some sharp acidity in this very dry wine, so drink it with rich foods with plenty of butter, olive oil and animal fat.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Jagged cherry and leather aromas carry some egg scents as well, followed by light red-fruit flavors with a citrusy edge. Tart and tannic, but cleansing and fresh. Simple Chianti in its most mainstreet form.

Alleanza is a winemaking venture between Giancarlo Roman and Napa’s Ed Sbragia (formerly of Beringer). Their combined efforts have produced a rich, modern wine bursting with cherry, blackberry, plum, oak, vanilla and exotic spice.

Castello di Gabbiano Red Blend - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark ruby with a burgundy-brown hue to its color, this wine seems older than it is and should be consumed within the next two years. However, that graceful aging process has imparted compelling aromas of black licorice, tar, dried lavender and roasted nuts over a bright, spicy finish. This wine is not overtly intense but it does play the elegance card well.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lean and focused, this wine offers dark berry and plum aromas with cedary accents. Chocolate and cocoa notes add interest on the palate. The acids are a touch high—but they keep the flavors and mouthfeel lively and will make the wine work well with food. Drink now through 2005.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Hints of mint, licorice and cedar precede grassy, leathery aromas. The palate on this Sangiovese is simple and slightly woody, with raspberry and strawberry notes. Finishes a bit thin and drying, with notes of oak and vanilla.

Earth and currants on the round, inviting nose. Plenty of sweet, forward fruit, especially ripe black plums. Less austere than many Chiantis, and for that it scores extra points. Not really one for the ages; best to enjoy now. Seems a lot like a California Sangiovese with its sweet, fruity profile.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Leather, mint and raisin aromas define the bouquet, which is backed by a ripe palate full of tree fruits. Feels rather heavy on the tongue, with grabby, hard tannins. The blend is Sangiovese, Merlot and Cab.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A hard-to-miss herbal streak lays heavily on the light-berry nose. Cranberry, red raspberry and some black pepper on the puckery palate. A bit unfocused and tart, it will nonetheless work well with spaghetti or something equally hearty.
