Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
New age in style, with ultrasweet aromas of berry preserves blended with pancetta and basil. One of the thickest, creamiest wines we encountered, with maple and bacon on the palate as well as candied cherry and plum. Could be perfect for some but sticky and cloyingly sweet to others.

There are slight accents of chocolate and licorice here that sit over a solid core of cherries and blackberries. The wine (a 60-40 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet) is rich and succulent in the mouth and would pair nicely with tomato, ricotta and sausage pasta.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet delivers soft and yielding notes of sweet cherry, cinnamon and creamy chocolate. Mature plum and dried fruit flavors are characteristic of the hot vintage. * The newer, 2004 vintage was already published.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Spice, clove, black pepper and rhubarb make up the aromas, while the flavors are sharp and lean. There’s a piercing red-fruit quality to the palate that isn’t overly generous. The finish, meanwhile, is fresh and mildly fruity, but again it’s underwhelming. Overall this wine is rather thin, sharp and angular. —M.S.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Simple and genuine red fruit sets the stage and is surrounded by a delicate frame of almond and toast. This is a clean, well-made wine that is easy and fun to drink. It imparts thick, fruity flavors and closes fresh thanks to its bright acidity. Castello di Meleto has 445 acres of vines in Gaiole-in-Chianti.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This austere Riserva exhibits a glorious color that is bright with beautiful reflections of ruby and garnet. Aromas include cherry, smoke, dried flowers and a light sprinkling of spice or peppercorn. In the mouth, the wine delivers drying tannins and an elegant close.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smooth and inviting aromas of spiced plums lay out the welcome mat, and that’s followed by a bright, edgy palate with popping cherry fruit. On the finish, more of that cherry fruit comes on strong. The only weakness is that the plate is slightly hollow in the middle; thus the wine lacks the depth required to push it to the next level. —M.S.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fairly ripe and round, with earth, fruit and oak wrapped into a well-wrapped package. Medium-strength in the mouth, with good but not stellar blackberry and raspberry flavors. Finishes a touch sharp and short. Solid overall.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s an inky, densely concentrated blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet with intense aromas of chocolate, coffee, ripe berry, plum and spice. The wine is rich, well textured and offers enormous length on the close. Those bright cherry flavors leave a rich and long impression.

Tree bark and rubber combine with red fruit to create a sweet, woody bouquet. The cranberry and cherry flavors are dry and linear, while the finish is a medium-weight mix of baked red fruit and tannin.
