Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Castello di Tassarolo is a medium-sized winery at the heart of Piedmont’s Gavi area with 20 hectares planted to the native Cortese grape. The entry-level Tassarolo S is an intensely fruity and refreshing wine that washes over the palate in a direct and determined manner. This is exactly the kind of wine you want to serve at picnics or outdoor lunches. White flowers, citrus peel and exotic fruit emerge from the nose and the wine leaves a trail of zest and crispness in the mouth.

Not sure what the S signifies, but the wine is bland and low-impact. Some pear fruit finds its way onto the palate, and the finish manages to carry on, although it doesn’t really say much. A bit of celery and tarragon flavor doesn’t help.

Rich in hue, with flowery aromas that turn creamy upon airing. This Gavi pours on the ripe apricot and nectarine, almost to the point of going overboard. While the fruit succeeds in exploding, there’s some balance missing as it veers toward sticky sweet.
