Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This very much emulates the style of the Merlot, with forward fruit, a hint of spice, and some coffee and clove in the finish. It’s a bit heftier, darker and more tannic than the Merlot, but equally approachable and well-balanced.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine has a promising, deep black cherry color to it, and it’s scented with dark, roasted coffee, tobacco and spice. The fruit seems perfectly ripe and balanced, though not jammy or raisiny in any way, and it includes nuances of herb and leaf that add a lot of flavor interest. Classy winemaking, with texture and depth in a drink-now style. 227 cases produced.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The nose is open and inviting, with soft scents of coffee and chocolate complementing the pretty cherry/berry fruit. It follows through in the mouth with lightly spicy fruit and a generous plumpness; pretty and engaging. Not a big, powerful wine, but delicious.

This exceptional bottle features fully ripe, compact fruit, with classic cassis and black-cherry flavors at its core. Streaks of earth and iron suggest that the vineyard has a distinctive terroir, and the wine has the muscle to age well for a decade or more. —P.G.

A powerful wine, built upon ripe, fat berry-cherry fruit. It’s nicely framed with oak; juicy and delicious, yet certainly ageworthy. 190 cases made. —P.G.

DuBrul is a rising star vineyard whose grapes have found their way into a dozen or more boutique winery bottlings; this is the first from Caterina. Tasty and sweetly scented with plum, cherry and red fruits, it’s deceptively simple, a bit unfocused at first. Yet hours later, it has gathered itself together into a deeper, more satisfying wine. 208 cases made. —P.G.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is 100% Merlot, smooth and high toned, showing ripe cherry, chocolate and tobacco flavors. There are definite nail-polish scents and flavors, but they burn off a bit. Pretty and sweet, it’s fairly high in tannin, which gives it a somewhat chewy finish. —P.G.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
All Cabernet, as this winemaker likes pure varietals. The nose is quite chocolatey, and the wine carries medium fruit flavors, firm and varietal, with fairly stiff tannins. —P.G.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Still young, raw and a bit oaky, this well-balanced wine just needs some more time to smooth itself out. All the right elements are there, from the polished fruit to the tangy acids to the toasty oak (slightly more than half is barrel fermented). This is a firm, fruity style, well-made and lively. Best Buy.

This is all Sauv Blanc, all stainless steel-fermented fruit from the Willard and Gordon Brothers vineyards. It offers bracing grapefruit scents and flavors that make it a perfect oyster wine as we head into winter. Crisp and steely, the emphasis is on the racy, vivid fruit. Best Buy. —P.G.
