Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Produced at the Quinta da Terrugem in the Alentejo, this ripe and soft wine has easy fruits, a lightness of touch. The tannins are a mere brushstroke over the red plum flavors, easy and accessible.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
In keeping with the austerity of the Dão landscape, this is a taut, mineral-inspired wine, with acidity that sweeps over the black berry fruit. The tannins give a firm core of dryness, but that acidity freshness keeps everything vivid and lively.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The dull red color, the aromas of black, tarry fruits and the heavily perfumed candied flavors are all part of this old-style wine. At the end, there is leanness and dryness. —R.V.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine’s color is already fading. Aromas of old wood are followed on the palate by juicy and jammy flavors. It is ripe, light and easy, with a dusty layer. —R.V.

Beefy, burly wine, shot through with dry Dão tannins, dry and firm. The fruit is juicy, lightly rustic, with high acidity coming through its rich meat gravy flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here are aromas of smoky, juicy fruit along with a palate of firm tannins, prominent overtones of new wood, with ripe acidity. This is a young wine, with good modern potential, which will age well over the next 5–10 years. Best Buy. —R.V.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine comes from Aliança’s new estate in the Douro, whose name means four winds. Made with consultant Michel Rolland, it is purple in color, with dominant aromas of new wood. To taste, it is rich, but the wood and sawdust flavors are too prominent for the spicy black fruit. This could integrate better in the next five years. —R.V.

A rare Portuguese Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend, made with the involvement of Bordeaux winemaker Pascal Chatonnet, working with Caves Aliança’s winemaker Francisco Antunes. Does it work? Yes, as a delicious curiosity. There is no connection with Portugal, but there is smooth new wood, and some pepper from alcohol. Then tannins are dry, the fruit is very ripe and very rich.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A hugely rich wine, packed with dried fruit flavors and spice from aging in American oak. This is a dense blend of Aragonez, Trincadeira and Cabernet Sauvignon, merging well together, the Cabernet giving structure, the other grapes the rich, smooth texture and black fruits.

Terrugem in the Borba region was acquired by Aliança in 1991, and now has 147 acres of vines. Bringing together the winemaking talents of Francisco Atunes and Bordelais Pascal Chatonnet, this is the top wine from the estate. It is smooth, polished, packed with dry tannins, as well as intense blackberry jelly flavors. This is a fine, deep-flavored wine, great for sophisticated cooking or just some good pork. Imported by Tri-Vin Imports.
