Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Has aromas of hickory smoke and blueberry, and flavors of red berries. An herbal/rhubarby undercurrent was a detraction for some, and a bonus for others. Medium-weight and creamy in the mouth, this Syrah closes long and mouthwatering. 285 cases produced.

Here’s a strong whiff of what Cayuse’s Christophe Baron calls the “good funk,” augmented with a blast of black pepper, meat and blood. There’s wild herb lurking in the background also, and as the Syrah opens up slowly in the glass it develops a powerful green tea scent. But what a glorious, pungent, earthy and sensuous mix of flavors, wild, organic and fascinating.

Smooth, supple and full-flavored, The Bionic Frog shows the characteristic uber-funk that it is known for. But in this new vintage it seems to be a bit less in-your-face than previously. There's plenty of wild herb, beef blood and silage to go around; but the flavors are already fully integrated, the wine viscous and plush with an intensely spicy quality. This is beautiful, thick and meaty yet still lifted through the finish, which keeps adding new scents and flavors as it sails along-vanilla, clove and baking spices.

A truly stunning wine of amazing complexity. It has layers of depth rarely found in any Washington wines, beginning with dense black fruits, black licorice, smoke, pepper and charcoal. The trademark Cayuse herbal/green tea elements are there also, more as hints than as layers. The aging in big neutral barriques has buffed it out; as it breathes in the glass the wine opens beautifully, gaining flesh and density. A genuine tour de force, deeply aromatic and fascinating.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Cayuse is really on a roll, as the inspired fanatic Christophe Baron methodically plants small plots of rock-strewn Walla Walla vineyard. Cailloux (formerly Cobblestone) was his first, and the single acre of Viognier yielded just 120 cases of wine in 2000, but what a wine! Succulent, glorious, peach-scented fruit mingles with butterscotch rum and a distinct impression of the stony, mineral “terroir” that makes the vineyard exceptional. Full malolactic fermentation and aging in neutral French oak render a Condrieu-styled Washington Viognier that ranks with the best in the country.

Even more herbal, and more tart, than the winery’s En Cerise bottling. Offers peppery aromas and sour red fruit and chocolate flavors, and is streaked with green through and through. Mouthfeel is creamy, but the finish is tart.

This Cailloux vineyard Viognier is dense and viscous, with powerful flavors of peach and apricot. They spread out from the ripe core into details of lemon rind, beeswax, marmalade, light honey and an aftertaste of rocky minerality. The fruit flavors just keep on coming, finally leading to lightly tropical with a butterscotch chaser.

This 100% Tempranillo is dark, meaty, smoky and super-rich. You find a pretty, floral nose, followed with cured meats, some saltiness too, and very dark fruit flavors with a lot of smoke and tar. This has the firm acidic base of Tempranillo, with immense extraction of color, tannin and plenty of bacon fat in the finish. It’s full, almost fleshy, with texture and flavor. Stylistically it fits right into the Cayuse formula, but does not (yet) stand apart as a unique varietal.

The lavish oak provides vanilla and coconut shadings on the tart dark-berry fruit. Its even, polished palate offers plum, coffee and cocoa flavors. Finishes a touch short, with espresso and bitter chocolate. It's very dark, perhaps a bit one-dimensional, but good of this type.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dense flavors of deep cherry fruit hold center stage in this intense and concentrated 100% Grenache. The flavors resonate through pure fruit, stone and chocolate, yet maintain a feminine, elegant style. Compared with other Cayuse wines, this has more sweet, deep, berry flavors, without sacrificing minerality and definition. It’s a joyful wine, saturated with beautiful fruit, pure and deeply satisfying.
