Deep and fairly tightly wound, with ripe berry, leather, and tobacco aromas and flavors. Stylish herb and mildly metallic notes yield a very Rhônish character once it breathes some. Starts dry—almost hard—then opens, developing nicely in the glass. Firm now, structured and handsome, and can age for three to six years.

Tangy and dry, with subdued pear-citrus-tropical fruit flavors and plenty of chalk-mineral-herb notes. This classy wine can hold its own with good Loire Chenin Blancs. It will sing with broiled or grilled seafood and most Asian cuisine.

Five generations of the Nieuwoud family have run the Cederberg farm, and this wine, along with a Cabernet Sauvignon, are here to commemorate. This is a great full-bodied white, showing a successful marriage of wood and peachy, aromatic fruit, layered with acidity. A delicious wine with aging potential. Starts off promising, with scents of mixed berries and lashings of vanilla and dried spices that continue onto and through the palate. Elegant wine with an attractive bouquet of dark fruit, Oriental spice, cinnamon and cocoa. Quite dry, with a similar palate profile. This has Tuscan manners—it’s solid, tasty, and firm—and demands food. Possible big league potential with greater depth of fruit and a bit more back-end length. Keep your eye on this producer.

There’s a touch of austerity to this wine, a firm set of tannins and some herbal character, all coming from the high-altitude (3,000-foot) vineyards of Cederberg. These suggest aging potential, because the fruit is there as well as a range of berry flavors to go with the dryness.

Half Merlot, 15% Pinotage, and the remainder Ruby Cabernet (a cross between Cab Sauvignon and Carignan), this wine has nice structure backed by refined tannins. A creamy nose of vanilla and cassis touched with mint leads to a full mouth of dark berry, coffee, balsam and barnyard. Has enough body to pair well with assorted cheeses. Cocoa dusted black raspberry, black currant and plum aromas up front transition to flavors of blackberry and fudgy brownie. Creamy and full in the mouth with medium tannins and a velvety texture. Approachable now, but pair with a good steak or fatty game like shoulder lamb chops for balance.
