* Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Always a disappointing nose, somewhat musty and restrained, it seems reluctant to release its fruit, there are sweet fruit aromas in the depths of the wine, and as the wine sits in the glass for some time, the aromas begin to emerge, perfumed black fruits, pepper, tar and earth; sweet and intense in the mouth, this wine has now matured nicely; still a bit closed, there are layers of rich fruit and tar, cassis, ripe flavors held in check with softened tannins and nicely balanced acidity; long rich finish; now emerging into its own, this is going to be an enduring ’82. (18/20) Having had several bottles of this during the year, I would extend a caution that there seems to be wide bottle variation in this wine, and some bottles that I have had were somewhat dry and coarse, without the richness of fruit that characterized the wine served at the Commanderie dinner.
