Very sweet and ripe nose, showing signs of decay now with hints of mushrooms and some volatile acidity, but still with the ripeness of stewed fruit and chocolate and caramel; spicy and surprisingly powerful in the mouth with little evidence on the palate of the decay seen in the nose; full fruit flavors mixed with spices, cloves and cinnamon; a bit thick and dense at the finish, lacking crispness and polish; I suspect that this needs to be drunk soon. Opens with a rich nose of cedar, tobacco, and sweet fruit, earthy and spicy, quite rich and full but I would never pick this as a Pomerol in a blind tasting; very much an ’85 with rich fruit and sweet, rich flavors in the mouth; jammy and smooth; very ripe and spicy; there is more of the merlot quality in the mouth than there is on the nose; well-made, polished and balanced; long finish, earthy and ripe. Huge nose with intense and powerful aromas of roses and black pepper, rich ripe fruit, smoke and earth mixed with alcohol; rich, ripe and intense in the mouth with an almost buttery character; layered flavors, quite focused with chunky tannins still layered into the fruit; cherry and citrus flavors; big and powerful; surprisingly muscular for a Pomerol.
