Like its ’96 sister, this wine comes on surprisingly strong and aggressive for a Pomerol, the nose exhibits a deep and dark personality that spews forth assertive aromas of elderberry jam and violets, salt marsh, and earth, and with more time in the glass with nuances of tar and chocolate mixed with black cherries; the flavors are big and assertive, but classic; there is the touch of saltiness at the edges of the palate, lots of sweet, ripe fruit mixed with spices, and because this is still an infant, there are big, chewy tannins that block some of the subtlety that I suspect will emerge in a few years; the wine is quite concentrated and dense now, and one has the feeling of biting into bunches of tight, little berries; the finish retains this big, burly character and finishes with a nice mix of citrus fruit, black fruits, and dense tannins. Powerful nose, surprisingly intense and assertive for this property, licorice, cracked black pepper, intense, extracted black fruit aromas, classic iodine, dark and brooding aromas; this is a dense and deep wine at this stage with extracted and concentrated black fruit flavors at the front of the mouth; showing more acidity and balance as the wine opens in the mouth, but the wine remains quite dense; good balance though, focused and fresh with a long, clinging finish that keeps the flavors in the mouth for a minute or more; this vintage has not received good marks from the writers, but this wine is certainly on target and has none of the hollowness that accompanies some of the wines that this vintage produced.
