I was surprised to discover this wine at Dave's Italian Kitchen in Evanston, IL for only $70 a bottle, presumably from Dave's collection. Still dark red, disguising its age. There's no way I would have guessed this wine was 20 years old in a blind tasting. Notes of burnt cherry, tobacco and tar. Most of the fruit flavors are gone, but it has a nice balance of earthiness and some acidity. I wasn't as high on it as Spectator was with it's 95 point rating, but it was cool to get to try an aged Bordeaux from a great estate at a restaurant at such a reasonable price.

Dusty nose, sweet but obviously old, a bit musty with the aromas of old leaves and a definite touch of volatile acidity here; better in the mouth, with soft and sweet flavors; dried fruit and toffee in the mouth; but also dried leaves and earth; dry and earthen at the end, and deteriorates rapidly in the glass; drink this one quickly. Very aromatic and lightly perfumed with a nice mix of floral and green herb scents, licorice, very earthen with a touch of mushroom scents with hints of chocolate, ripe fruit; first taste on the palate is loaded with sweet fruit, concentrated and focused small berries; black fruits; becoming more tannic and dry with a searing edge that creates hard textures in the wine; long finish nice fresh lemony flavors that have a lingering effect in the mouth; this wine remains good for the vintage, and in this format is still quite fresh. Viewed by many as one of the best of this remarkable vintage, this wine opened with the sweetness and intensity on the nose that the best of these wines have developed, loaded with sweet ripe fruit aromas, tar and cassis, earth, smoke, perfumed and floral with nicely blended aromas of green peppers and green spices; sweet and almost thick in the mouth with a density of concentration that focuses the palate right from the start; layers of sweet fruit and tar; this wine is not ready yet in this format, showing some powerful dry tannins along the edge of the palate; somewhat austere still, but has the bottomless depth of flavors that will emerge over the next few years; this wine probably will earn a perfect score in a few years, as it is close now. Soft and sweet nose with lots of black cherry aromas, very light nose with a distant, remote feel, but clean and fresh; soft and smooth in the mouth with nice fruit and good texture, but quite light; a bit thin in the middle, and lacking some of the elements that would make it a great wine, but finishes well with soft sour red cherry flavors and a touch of earth; las-Cases lite. Sweet and ripe nose, lots of chocolate aromas here, mixed with light and fresh citrus aromas, mocha and earthen aromas; sweet and full on the palate with the extra sweetness that is characteristic of this vintage; chocolate and mocha flavors, light citrus fruit and pomegranate; smooth and silky and pretty much mature now; silky and most pleasing on the palate as is typical of this vintage, but also typically lacking some of the depth and body that the best vintages have; perhaps the most palate pleasing of the recent vintages. Powerful and intense nose, deep and complex, layered with aromas of licorice, mocha, green herbs, spices, rich and ripe black fruits; great intensity in the mouth with sweet and rich fruit flavors; powerful earthen flavors that are reminiscent of truffles and root vegetables; powerful tannins not yet fully evolved, but at the same time the wine is approachable and expressive; complex and elegant with flavors of dry chocolate mixed in with the flavors of tar and pomegranates; this is some wine.
