Light and refined nose of dried flowers and sweet fruit, lemons and red cherries, earth, “old vine” aromas; light and refined in the mouth, showing age but not damage; red cherries, quite elegant with beautiful fruit; not much power here or depth now, but I suspect that there probably never was; nice texture in the mouth; fresh and clean on the palate; this is one of the two “good” vintages from this decade, all of the wines from this year, as well as the ‘37’s, tend to be light and bordering on thin; this is as good as I’ve tasted from this vintage. (17/20) Another bottle from a different source was cooked and undrinkable.

This is one of the unheralded vintages in Bordeaux, and several properties made excellent wines, this is one of them; candied nose with very sweet fruit aromas, perfumed and floral, elegant and refined, definitely a feminine wine; lots of sweet fruit on the palate with a refined, aged but not old character to the flavors; touches of milk chocolate mixed with flower extracts; this wine may be too delicate and feminine for many, but I find it refined and exotic. Elegant nose right from the start, lots of sweet fruit laced throughout with black peppercorns, tobacco leaves, minerals, earthen, but at the same time floral and aromatic with sweet black cherry fruit aromas; sweet and rich in the mouth with a wonderful structure that is both dense and refined at the same time; loaded with quince that has the dryness of mature tannins; spicy and exotic, this is a bold-faced wine that is also powerful and fragrant; Margaux often gets overlooked among the first growths in this vintage, but it shouldn’t. Wonderful nose of sweet wafting floral perfumes, lilacs and hyacinths, herbs mixed with a hint of caramel, red clover and field grasses, moving to truffles and earth at the end; sweet and soft in the mouth with light and elegant flavors; the wine lacks stuffing, though, and signals the beginning of the decline of this property that lasted for more than a decade; there is a certain element of spice and earthiness in the wine, but the finish is light and somewhat diffuse and vague; this is a nice wine but not a First Growth. Wonderful powerful and rich nose that has the characteristic elegance and airiness of Margaux; chocolate and violets, tar, licorice, wood and lots of soft sweet and rich fruit; this is now emerging from its shell of many years and for the first time is beginning to show the luxurious quality of this wine; sweet and soft in the mouth with layers of ripe fruit; cassis and black cherry flavors, softened tannins are in evidence, but now seem more harmonious than even one year ago; long finish with rich layers of fruit and a perfect balance of flavors; in past years this has not been ready to drink, but this bottle at least shows enough maturity to be able to experience this wine. Another excellent wine from this overlooked vintage; sweet and rich nose with deep fruit aromas, black fruits, cherries, cassis, raspberry and blackberry scents mix with an exotic tinge of lilacs and violets; elegant and earthen in the mouth with sweet fruit flavors; the wine shows its breeding, and while not a blockbuster it has class; the flavors are an interesting mix of dry tannins that are seemingly still integrating into a body of wine that has the flavors of blackberry jam; the wine is a bit four-square and does not have the finesse or balance of the better vintages, but a nice way to pass an evening.
