Very classic Montrose, opens with a powerful nose of green herbs, pepper, and earth, then assumes a richer, deeper, and more fruit-laden nose, but remains big and intense with aromas of tar, black fruits, and sour mash; quite smooth in the mouth with powerful flavors of sweet black cherry fruit; has the typical elements of field grass, green herbs, touch of pine, pepper and tar; complex and deep with powerful tannins; quite balanced, but needs more time to evolve to reach it full potential; this is a complex and focused wine; tasted with a 1992 Stag’s Leap cask 23 at the dinner. Two different bottles of this wine were tasted days apart with very different results; the nose on both bottles was similar, soft, sweet and elegant with floral scents, and in the better bottle, enticing aromas of cassis and fruit mixing with chocolate, herbs and licorice; the better bottle was soft and perfumed on the palate with layers of sweet fruit and licorice; spicy and smooth with that wonderful patina that accompanies the great wines with age; it never attacks the palate but skims over it on tiptoes, tantalizing the taste buds with constant hints of different flavors; there is good citrus fruit in the wine at the end, which freshens the finish, and produces a nice balance with which to remember the experience; the lesser bottle lacked these elements and tended to finish dry and short, with a thinner, less elegant statement; I rate only the better bottle here.
