A classic in every respect, the wine opens with a wonderful deep and aromatic nose, cassis, lilacs, earth, tar, layers of aroma with a seductive sweet scent; smooth as silk in the mouth; quite sweet and loaded with sweet fruit, but at the same time very focused and elegant; black cherry and plum flavors, wonderful citric acidity, but not very much; soft earthy tannins provide texture and focus; long smooth finish; a wonderful wine. This has been consistently one of the better wines from this vintage showing more complexity and balance than many; this bottle does not disappoint, opening with a classic nose of black cherries and lots of green pepper aromas, more earth and richness develop as the wine opens, with the black cherry aromas expanding and the green pepper receding to be replaced with more oriental spice box aromas; the flavors are beginning to show a lot of dry earthiness now, having lost a bit of the fruit; but still sweet and lush overall; long finish, ripe and rich fruit with earthy, grainy tannins. Opens with all of the elements of a Pichon, with sweet aromas mixed with earth, perfumed and aromatic, quite floral as is the wont of these wines, elegant and rich; sweet and rich in the mouth with fully mature fruit now producing a deeply textured wine but with focus and flavor; nicely integrated and softened tannins provide a thick curtain for the fruit; no sign of aging in this bottle, and powerful focus throughout; long finish; this remains one of the best of the ‘83’s, and is now in full flower. Not a vintage that is seen much, and there is good reason for it; the nose shows that this was a difficult vintage, musty and unclean at the beginning, thin and attenuated, taking on more sweetness later, but it is artificial with a sweet chocolate and caramel aroma that comes from added sugar, slightly medicinal; light and thin in the mouth with weak flavors; there is some fruit and there is sweetness but it is sugary and artificial; short finish, but still a clean wine with some character. Interesting and somewhat complex nose already, quite intense, with aromas of green pepper and green herbs mixed with tar and roasted coffee bean aromas, quite full already although not yet evolved into a full nose; this wine changed dramatically in the glass, getting better as more time passed; at first a bit tight and showing lots of unintegrated tannins; then more complex and sweet with perfumed nuances on the palate; quite exotic and ripe with rich flavors in a fabric of smooth, silky textures; this is going to be really good.
