Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
93-95 Barrel Sample Very dark in color, almost black, this wine has sweetly ripe fruit, very opulent, chocolaty and with seriously concentrated fruit. It is hugely powerful, very dark.

91-93 Firm and tannic, very structured wine, while still savoring its rich fruit character. This feels very opulent and rich. There is a problem with alcohol showing through as a pepper edge.

89-91 A big, spicy wine with high toasty wood flavors. It's hard initially to find the fruit, but it is there, dark, heady and brooding.

Initially the wine is all firm tannins, but then there is a pure line of fresh black fruits that comes through, with cranberry tannins and blackberry jamminess. Above it all, is succulent richness and clear acidity. A beautifully shaped wine.

94-96 Barrel sample. A immensely powerful wine, heaving with fresh fruit and dark tannins. It is full of spiced plums, dark cherries and berries. These lie over wood and a powerful structure.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
93-95 Barrel sample. A spicy, densely sweet wine, all ripe purple fruits bursting out of a straitjacket of tannins, with the wood flavors quite dominant at this stage. The wine is firm, but the fruit is so big that the dryness is lost.

A complete wine, from the black currant fruits through the balanced tannins to the acidity. It is sturdy, complex, a wine that is already singing and will age well.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There is good density here, a wine that seems well balanced and integrated. It has a solid, firm kernel, but this is balanced with great fresh acidity as well as blackberry fruits. The wine still seems to be coming together after bottling, and certainly needs 4–5 years.

I'm not an experienced barrel taster, but this was delicious. I liked it better than the Petrus and Troplong Mondot we tasted the same day. 96 could be low, but not likely too high.

This bottle was a gift from my oldest friend who moved it 3 times since we used to call it our "house" wine in the late 60's when it was 7 bucks a bottle. He stumbled upon a case in his basement where it had been untouched for 15 years. Brought to Ambria (Chicago) a week before our reservation and the sommelier kept it standing to settle any sediment. He had it decanted and waiting when we arrived for our reservation. It was almost difficult to wait thru the first 2 courses of the chef's homage au Spain tasting menu with a bottle of Billicart-Salmon. We also brought an '86 Lafite as a back-up for the Angelus. The fill level and the cork were like a new bottle and the wine was nearly perfect as well. The color was barely showing any brick at the edges and the nose was full and floral. I probably would have given this 100 points had the sommelier not asked if we wanted to open the Lafite. Of course we consented and the Lafite was, incredibly but not unexpectedly, even better. The wines so far surpassed the 4 star food, that I barely remember what we ate, but the taste of the wines will remain memorable.
