Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Soft, rounded, a wine that is both fresh and open. Red berry fruits are suffused with acidity, giving a light touch. This is a wine for drinking in 2–3 years.

Beychevelle’s style is for elegance, and this wine epitomizes that character. It is sweet, soft, with light tannins, achieving a balance of black fruits and acidity, light in structure and depth.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The most beautifully situated chateau, with its great view of the Gironde estuary, Beychevelle is another of those Médoc estates that has found top form after a fallow period in the 1980s and early ’90s. The wine’s generosity, sweetness and fruit is balanced with the carefully crafted structure of wood that underpins it all. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.

If any wine could be described as beautiful, then Beychevelle is beautiful. Its flavors of liquorice and blackcurrant are smooth and opulent, well proportioned. The texture is rich, ripe and generous.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Yes, there is a huge amount of new wood here. It tastes highly toasty, making wood tannins the only ones at present. But there is something more that comes from the almost hidden layer of perfumed fruit. Give this wine the benefit of the doubt—Beychevelle is performing well at the moment.

94-96 Barrel sample. A dense, powerful wine, packed with very dry, very dark tannins. There is great fruit as well, ranging from black currant to black plums to black cherries. A very fine wine.

89-91 While the sample has reductive aromas, it has enough dry fruits and dense tannins to show a wine which has good potential. The acidity and freshness come through.

91-93 Barrel sample. Dark, intense wine, its structure initially dominating the ripe fruits. It is certainly balanced, a little severe perhaps, the fruit tight, but with a good fresh acid streak.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very much in an elegant style, this wine shows soft, almost velvet tannins supporting the ripe fruit. It has richness, a round character masking the dense texture, and setting off the clean red berry fruits and fresh acidity.

93-95 A strongly tannic wine, powered by a dry core that pushes through the sweet fruit. Great weight as well as tension between the acidity and the dark heart of the wine.
