Taking advantage of the delicious fruit of 2006, this Branaire-Ducru shows a charming side. It brings out ripe, spicy black plums and black cherry spice to go with the lively, fresh tannins. That’s not to say that there isn’t structure, but today it is the fruit that dominates.

Here is a huge ripe and luxurious wine, with great power. The texture is solid, filled with firm tannins, the flavors are black and ripe. Along with the power, though, is much of the elegance and poise that characterizes great Saint-Julien.

New wood and high extraction are the dominant characteristics of this wine. That makes it in a modern, polished style, which will certainly evolve well, eventually arriving at something that is big and bold. Give it 4–5 years for that.

88-90. There are ripe fruit aromas, followed by spicy fruit, some new wood flavors by not too much. A well-balanced wine which has good potential.

93-95 Barrel sample. A huge, generous, opulent wine, with cedar aromas, a touch of toast and immense black fruits. And it still keeps a delicacy and elegance: very Saint-Julien .

This is a delicious wine already, not powerful, but charming and elegant. The acidity and fruit are easy and bright, the tannins light but properly in balance. That suggests this is not for aging. It’s already a pleasure to drink now.

89-91 Barrel sample. Dark, somewhat austere, a wine that masks the generosity of Saint-Julien. Everything is there, but in grey and white, rather than vivid color.

This is opulent, but with restraint. The fruit is rich, black and delicious. Touches of spice and wood are present, lending complexity to the ripe fruits and balanced tannins. Impressive.

One of the great estates of southern Saint-Julien, producing wines whose regularity in succeeding vintages is remarkable. For 2003, Branaire has produced a dark wine, with dry, powerful tannins coming from very ripe fruit. The wood is dry and toasty, leaving a general impression of a wine that will age at a stately pace. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.
