Under the management of Céline Villars-Foubet, and the same ownership as Châteaux Ferrière and La Gurgue, this is always one of the most popular estates in the Médoc. This 2002 shows why, with its ripe, open fruit and sweet tannins. It should develop well over 5–10 years, but will be drinkable sooner.

90-92 All structure and tannin over the austere black fruits. The wine at this stage is powered by its texture rather than the fruit.

Under any new classification, this should certainly be a classed growth. Today it is among the leaders of the crus bourgeois. The 2000 is opulent, generous, stylish. The tannins are ripe and sweet, the fruit is finely balanced. It will develop well over the next 10-15 years.

88–90 A finely-made wine, which shows softness as well as density of fruit. This will develop well, and relatively quickly.

Always one of the star crus bourgeois, Chasse-Spleen has produced a 2003 that manages to combine the rich, ripe fruits of the year with the right tannins and sweetness, along with blackberry fruits. It has the elegance and delicacy of Moulis, as well as some good intensity of flavor. A wine that will certainly age for 10 years or more.

91-93 Barrel sample. Great, spicy new wood flavors are balanced by the intense, solid fruits and deep, almost brooding tannins. This is a big wine, but it still preserves a good sense of proportion.
