A firm, dark wine, with tannin topping tannin as the layers get piled up. There is a rustic edge to it, but that should burn off as the wine ages. There are plenty of black fruits merging with the tannins.

Dry, lean and structured, here is a wine that initially seems to be missing its fruit. There are hints of black cherries and plum skins, but they are always going to be surrounded by a heavy tannic presence.

87-89 The aromas are of new wood, but the palate has plenty of fruit tannins to go with the wood. But it remains tannic and very dry.

90-92 Packed with new wood that dominates the fruit. The style does have some elegance, while the new wood will need to calm down.

A ripe wine, the wood a band of flavor through the sweet tannins and attractive fresh fruits. It has the lightness of the year, leaving the flavors coming from the bright fruits.

There’s a core of solid, dry tannins that dominate this wine. But, as with so many 2004s, there is also a delicious, almost ready-to-drink freshness, emphasizing the juicy fruit flavors.

86-88 Barrel sample. Hugely tannic, and somewhat rustic, this is dark, dense and very tough. Its tannins are totally dominant, giving the wine a hard edge.

A dense, solid wine that’s packed with ripe fruit, concentrated tannins and layers of spice, acidity and toast. This is a classic St.-Estèphe style, firm when young and likely to develop slowly and satisfyingly. Give this wine at least six years.

90-92 Barrel sample. Tough tannins over juicy fruit. The wine has great ripeness as well as freshness. The intensity of the blackcurrant is considerable.

86-88 Barrel sample. The neighbor of Cos d'Estournel, but producing a very contrasted wine, lean and tautly structured. The tannins are dry, hard to penetrate, the finish austere.
