With 30% Cabernet Franc in the blend, this shows the textured, structured side of Saint-Emilion. The tannins are firm, but come from the delicious fruit, particularly the bright blackberry fruits that give a final lift.

A charmer. A soft, perfumed wine, light but well balanced. The berry fruits are just hinting at the start of maturity. The wine, though, has great freshness and delicious acidity, with the tannins now rounding out.

This is powerful, a fine expression of the richness of 2005. Dense and dusty tannins fit in the structure of ripe, black plums and currants. It has just the right amount of acidity to keep fresh among all this richness.

96-98 Barrel sample. A wine that shows intense spice, with ginger and grated nutmeg. This lies over the top of the ripest yellow fruits, added to mango, sweet pears and a fresh, final character. Complex wine with an immense future.

89-91 Barrel sample. A big, rounded character, this is relatively soft, toasty almost, the fruit open, generous but unfocussed. It offers richness with a final tang of dryness.

The aromas are intensely sweet, full of orange marmalade and honey. The palate goes more for spice, with oranges and brown sugar allied to fresh fruits, apricots and lychees. The final flavors are delicious and enticing.

Surprisingly dry, this has richness rather than sweetness, and intense, powerful botrytis. The honey is intensely perfumed, along with baked apples and spice. Certainly a long-aging wine.
