With its high wood flavors and aromas of mint, this sets out to be a modern, extracted style of wine. But it has the lightness of Margaux in 2007, the Cabernet tannins soft and open. It already has good balance, suggesting it is not for long aging.

94-96 A very structured wine, retaining great acidity and freshness. The tannins cut right to the heart of the wine. The aftertaste is solid and chunky.

The beautiful moated Issan Château is producing better wine every year. This 2008, from a vineyard that was badly hit by hail that year, has an elegance and style that is very much in keeping with southern Margaux. There is also a fine balancing density, sweet plum fruit and, with its fine tannins, great aging potential.

The moated castle of Issan belongs to the Cruse family, one of Bordeaux’s most famous. Under the direction of Emmanuel Cruse, and with consultant Jacques Boissenot, the estate is enjoying something of a renaissance. With its great, generous, rich and sweet fruit, its ripe tannins and its black jelly flavors, it makes a powerful statement. Wood is there, but doesn’t dominate. The wine will develop over the next 5–10 years.

An intense, tight wine, with stalky black currant fruit. It exhibits delicacy and elegance rather than power. Fresh fruit with an attractive smoky element make this a wine that is going to develop further, and it has a fresh, vibrant finish.
