Full-bodied and a bit heavy to make a delicate quaff, but pair this wine with the right summer foods (a juicy hamberger comes to mind) and it will work. Some tarry, meaty notes obscure what appears to be delicate cherry fruit that ends with a peppery tang.

Attractive deep color. Fairly intense baked red and bramble fruit, hickory smoke, peppery spice and a nuance of eucalyptus. Plummy, with notes of prune, earthy flavors. Chewy tannins, a little grainy on texture, but appealing in its slight rusticity. Moderately long savory finish.

Throwing a healthy sediment already, this blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre could actually use another six months or so to drop additional tannin. It’s an unusually forceful vintage for this wine, which is usually friendly and forward. Although in many years it tends toward red fruit flavors, the 2001 is graced with black cherry fruit and complex notes of tree bark, earth and pepper.

Cocoa and cedar aromas dominate the bouquet, but then some dark fruit emerges on the palate. It’s dense, rich and flavorful, but lacks the elegance and finesse to score higher.

Comes across as slightly tarry and rubbery, which distracts from the otherwise crisp citrus and melon flavors. Still, it's a pleasant, medium-bodied quaff.

There’s not a lot of intensity here, but some good lemony crispness and an intriguing popcorn note. Drink now, this one is on fast fade.
